01 Challenge

A publicly owned organisation responsible for the city’s pollution-enforcement systems needed to address growing cybersecurity threats to the legacy systems behind its roadside data capture. With the remaining lifespan of the primary enforcement (camera) system unknown, a tactical modernisation strategy was required to tackle the rising cybersecurity risk while staying within fixed government financial constraints.

02 What If

What if you could prolong the system’s lifespan, shrink the information-security attack surface, and prepare it for future expansion, letting the installed camera base support additional enforcement and surveillance purposes, while ensuring interoperability with both existing and new hardware?

03 Result

Together with the operational and technical team, we mapped and qualified the cyberattack surface and risk areas to determine how to reduce the attack risk and prioritise the effort. In a joint effort with the system supplier, we established a technical plan for upgrading components, sanitising platform features, and meeting both new compliance requirements and future needs. Modernising the platform also unlocked new functional capabilities, letting the system serve additional operational purposes and share the cost of the upgrade. To ensure successful execution, we set a clear plan for the technical upgrade, securing resources for technical clarifications, testing, and data migration as part of the go-live cut-over, so the system could be upgraded in the background with little to no impact on availability.
